Heat Can't Beat Stream Clean-Up
BETSY MCMILLION - September 20, 2006

The Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway, Inc. and Bethany United Methodist Church Youth Group of
Ellicott City recently sponsored a stream clean up on August 3 removing approximately 200 pounds of trash along
Miller Run, one of several streams flowing into the Patapsco River, near Patapsco State Park (Hollifield Area, off Route
40.

The 90-degree weather didn’t stop eleven energetic volunteers from removing ten bags of trash and other debris from
the Miller Run stream. According to Jim Apgar, Catonsville resident and Miller Run Stream Clean up Leader for the
Friends of the Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway, the type of trash that was removed includes  “pieces of plaster,
plastic bottles, metal cans and cardboard boxes, with the most unusual piece of trash being a ball of yarn.  The kids
had a great time splashing in the stream, soaking in the pools and they managed to pick up trash along the way.  I
hope that this experience will make them want to treasure and protect Patapsco State Park.”

Trash in the streams and along the stream banks can be traced to litter on the highways.  After a rain storm, the litter
is washed away into nearby storm drains and ends up in the nearest stream.  Anything that goes down the storm
drains directly affects the wildlife, plant life and the quality of the water in and around the stream.

Individuals and organizations interested in volunteering for future stream cleanups or would like to participate in the
stream watch adoption program may contact the Friends of the Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway at
